چکیده

We provide first-time fixed-parameter tractability results for the NPhard problems Maximum Full-Degree Spanning Tree and MinimumVertex Feedback Edge Set. These problems are dual to each other: In Maximum Full-Degree Spanning Tree, the task is to find a spanning tree for a given graph that maximizes the number of vertices that preserve their degree. For Minimum-Vertex Feedback Edge Set, the task is to minimize the number of vertices that end up with a reduced degree. Parameterized by the solution size, we exhibit that Minimum-Vertex Feedback Edge Set is fixed-parameter tractable and has a problem kernel with the number of vertices linearly depending on the parameter k. Our main contribution for Maximum Full-Degree Spanning Tree, which is W[1]-hard, is a linear-size problem kernel when restricted to planar graphs. Moreover, we present a dynamic programming algorithm for graphs of bounded treewidth.

On the Directed Degree-Preserving Spanning Tree Problem

In this paper we initiate a systematic study of the Reduced Degree Spanning Tree problem, where given a digraph D and a nonnegative integer k, the goal is to construct a spanning out-tree with at most k vertices of reduced out-degree. This problem is a directed analog of the wellstudied Minimum-Vertex Feedback Edge Set problem. We show that this problem is fixed-parameter tractable and admits a...

Parameterized complexity of team formation in social networks

Given a task that requires some skills and a social network of individuals with different skills, the Team Formation problem asks to find a team of individuals that together can perform the task, while minimizing communication costs. Since the problem is NP-hard, we identify the source of intractability by analyzing its parameterized complexity with respect to parameters such as the total numbe...

On the directed Full Degree Spanning Tree problem

We study the parameterized complexity of a directed analog of the Full Degree Spanning Tree problem where, given a digraph D and a nonnegative integer k, the goal is to construct a spanning out-tree T of D such that at least k vertices in T have the same out-degree as in D. We show that this problem is W[1]-hard even on the class of directed acyclic graphs. In the dual version, called Reduced D...

SOLVING A STEP FIXED CHARGE TRANSPORTATION PROBLEM BY A SPANNING TREE-BASED MEMETIC ALGORITHM

In this paper, we consider the step fixed-charge transportation problem (FCTP) in which a step fixed cost, sometimes called a setup cost, is incurred if another related variable assumes a nonzero value. In order to solve the problem, two metaheuristic, a spanning tree-based genetic algorithm (GA) and a spanning tree-based memetic algorithm (MA), are developed for this NP-hard problem. For compa...

Fixed Parameter Evolutionary Algorithms and Maximum Leaf Spanning Trees: A Matter of Mutation

Evolutionary algorithms have been shown to be very successful for a wide range of NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems. We investigate the NP-hard problem of computing a spanning tree that has a maximal number of leaves by evolutionary algorithms in the context of fixed parameter tractability (FPT) where the maximum number of leaves is the parameter under consideration. Our results show ...
